National Crime Agency of United Kingdom Creates New Crypto Unit

The UK's National Crime Agency is looking for a team of law enforcement officers to investigate crypto crimes.

The Crypto Cell of the national cybercrime unit's investigators will have a proactive cryptocurrency focus and the tools and capabilities to target individuals in the UK.

The Financial Conduct Authority found that the UK's cryptocurrency industry experienced the highest rate of financial fraud warnings between March 2021 and April 2022. The organization opened 432 cases during that time to look into cryptocurrency-related fraud schemes.

As part of the initiative, the NCA is looking to hire a cryptocurrency investigator with extensive background in conducting blockchain forensic investigations on serious and organized crime.

The new NCA crypto crime team will assist both ongoing and new investigations by assisting investigators on both the tactical and strategic aspects of cases involving cryptocurrencies. The position requires knowledge of finding and recovering seed words as well as sophisticated blockchain tracing.

In response to a spike in cryptocurrency fraud in the UK and the National Police Chiefs' Council's placement of crypto tactical advisors in police stations throughout last year, the decision to create a law enforcement unit with a focus on cryptocurrencies was made. Legislators made the decision in November to empower local law enforcement to take cryptocurrency linked to nefarious and terrorist conduct.
